There's no such thing as too much information when you're training for a big race. Enter the Sigma BC 1609 Cadence bicycle computer, which includes everything from a speedometer to a countdown timer to an optional cadence measurement function--all compatible with online PC software. The BC 1609, which is adjustable to fit two wheel sizes, displays your current speed, average speed, and maximum speed, so you'll have a good idea whether you're the tortoise or the hare on the bike trail. You can also compare your current and average speed on the same screen, or check the trip distance and total distance (the latter is only available after your ride). The computer even offers a programmable trip section counter, a roadbook that lets you create a back-and-forth itinerary.
The BC 1609's timing functions include a countdown timer that's perfect for racing against the clock; a stopwatch that keeps you sharp on intervals; a display for elapsed and total riding time (the latter is only available after your ride); and a time-keeping clock. And serious cyclists can opt to use the cadence functions (current and average), which help you ride efficiently both on the road and in the woods. You can also turn off the cadence functions while riding.
The BC 1609 is versatile in other ways, too, with the ability to automatically recognize a second bike. That means you can gauge the total distance and ride time of either or both bikes, a handy option for couples or friends who train together. Other features include a temperature display, seven language settings, a backlight, a battery status display, and a backup function that preserves your settings and info even when the battery dies. Also available in a wireless version, the PC-compatible BC 1609 mounts on your handlebar or stem for easy access.

It was an upgrade for my cateye velo 5 and I enjoy having cadence, average speed and even temperature and stopwatch readings. I also like the fact that it can easily be installed on the stem, as for a road bike handle bar space is limited. So far I got a few hundred miles on this and it worked with no problems. There are a few minor disadvantages: - The cadence attachment does not plug into the mount quite as well as I'd like. Especially when mounting on the stem, the contacts need to be bend a little. - Also for larger frames (I got a 62 cm), the cadence wire is too short to reach the chain stay. So I mounted my cadence sensor on the down tube, works great. - The front wheel magnet will not easily fint flat spokes (I had to install it at the very center, where my spokes are round). Having a wired computer has advantages over wireless: - No transimission problems, once the thing is installed, it works. - Smaller... Interestingly, this one came with the cadence wiring though I don't think the description on Amazon mentions it (so I'm not sure if yours will come with cadence). I decided to go with a wired a computer for the extra reliability because I ride a lot at night with high-power CygoLite LED lights. And multiple people have said wireless bike computers have interference issues with close-by LED lights. While riding most riders will only need current speed and trip distance. And that's usually what I have on the main screen. Once I get home after a ride, it's nice to look at my average and maximum speeds. BC1609 seems accurate and was very easy to calibrate. All I needed was my bike tire size for the initial set-up. BC1609 can be used on two separate bikes with the optional 2nd bike kit - though I have not tried this feature yet. I also called Sigma to see if I can keep the great backlight on all the time... Read more 15 of 17 people found the following review helpful By Citronell (West Covina, Ca. I can read everything on the screen, no problem! It's a wired device, and was very easy to install in about 15 minutes. It worked the first time without any adjustments. The spoke magnet needs to be closer than 5mm to the sensor that is mounted to the fork. Just use a 6mm open end wrench to make a visual check on the distance. The computer is easy to set-up. Easy to use and easy to remove from holder when you jump off your bike for a few minutes. I think everyone would be happy with this bike computer. |
