No question about it. Stimulators are among the most effective large size attractor flies around.

They are versatile, float well, are very visible, and can imitate a lot of different things that look good to trout.

Wherever you are, as soon as the stone flies hatch, stimulators will be switch on and will continue to work right on through the fall. Next up, hoppers will be hitting the water, and during this time, the stimulator continues to fool a lot of fish. Along the way caddis flies will have the trout's attention, and again this all around prospecting pattern will be in its prime.

The stimulator works for all of these bugs and more because, to a trout, it just seems to look like a tasty treat that's floating by.

In my neck of the woods (northern Adirondacks) the orange variety seems to work best, perhaps because of a high iron content in many of our streams. I like sizes 8 - 12 best. When I need something smaller, I'll shift to the... Read more
