First heard in the 427 Small Block, Ashdown’s Dual Tube bass preamp was an instant hit, thanks to its solid, articulate bottom end and sparkling highs. With its stunning polished chrome panel, the 550W Ashdown Dual Tube Series 550 head takes this stunning tube preamp design and partners it with the tour proven ABM 500 power stage. The discerning bass player gets high and low gain inputs, front panel-mounted FX send and return, rotary bass, middle and treble controls with mid shift, bass shift and bright switching, mute switch, rotary gain and master volume controls and a DI output.

First off this thing is stunning. The chrome front plate and the VU meter just ooze retro awesomeness. I realize that this look may not be for everyone but I think it's cooler than cool.

I had to order this off Amazon b/c the only Ashdown retailers are 30-60 miles away from me and the one I visited didn't have a single Ashdown product. When it came to my door the first thing that hit me was how heavy it is. It's near as makes no difference 31 lbs. Which albeit isn't SVT heavy but seeing all the 8-10 pound heads out there this is quite a bit. I personally don't mind the heft too much as it feels incredibly sturdy and especially since my last head broke down on me it makes me more confident in this one.

I don't have much to complain about with this amp but allow me to vent on the little there is. I do wish that someone at Ashdown had thought to put a set of rubber feet on the side of it so that you could stand it up vertically. My previous amp had them and while... Read more
